Portraits of Essential California Workers, The New York Times 2020
Responding to an alarming increase in coronavirus hospitalizations, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a major rollback of California’s reopening. This, however, excludes essential workers who continue risking their lives to keep the state up and running.

From Cairo to Cape: On Racial and Social Inequality Across the Continent, Egyptian Streets 2018
Towards the end of the 19th century, the idea of a Cape to Cairo railway was born — a project that, at the time, was set to connect British possessions across the continent through a continuous line. To this day, however, the project remains a hopeful dream. But instead of a railway, the continent is connected by rampant inequality.

Kicking In A Vacuum? Why Football Can't Be Apolitical, Egyptian Streets 2018
FIFA’s codes and regulations have a very clear stance when it comes to politics; any display of it is strictly prohibited. In the 2018 World Cup, we saw the Federation put its stance into action when Albanian-Kosovan Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri were fined after celebrating their goals against Serbia by putting their hands together to form a double-headed eagle, resembling the Albanian flag. FIFA found it to be a clear breach of its codes. But can football ever be apolitical?

A Contradiction in Terms? Islamic Feminism and Reopening "Bab al-Ijtihad", The Caravan 2017
By the end of the 10th century, Sunni jurists “closed the gate of ijtihad” and said new interpretations of Islamic law and conduct were no longer needed. For the next 1,000 years, Muslim societies have had to accept these interpretations, some of which have fallen to scrutiny as sexist, misogynistic and degrading of the status of contemporary women.

Forbidden Lenses, 2017
I worked on this project with two colleagues for my multimedia journalism undergraduate capstone project. We reported on the negative effects of filming restrictions and regulations on tourism in Egypt, in light of the industry's massive decline following the 2011 Revolution. I reported alongside my colleagues, wrote the articles and managed our social media campaign. I also aided in the production of the video and audio pieces.

CODING & DATA
I used data from Forbes to create this visualization, which shows the percentage by which some of the world's billionaires got richer amid the pandemic. I created it using d3 (JavaScript), HTML and CSS.
The below three visualizations are part of the same project. I used the World Bank's data on global male and female employment over the past three decades. I cleaned the data using Excel and OpenRefine and created the charts using Tableau.
The first chart highlights countries that experienced massive changes in their female employment.
The first chart highlights countries that experienced massive changes in their female employment.
The second is an animated chart that compares female and male employment in each country. The trend line highlights which countries have more working women and which have more working men.
The third is another animated chart that highlights the change in the ratio between female and male employment. The chart only shows countries with a ratio of 1 or above, where male employment remained higher. The higher the country is placed, the bigger the gap between male and female employment.
AUDIO
I produced this audio documentary in 2017 for my undergraduate audio production class. I looked into the historical significance of tattoos in Egypt at a time when they were becoming more noticeable while remaining culturally unacceptable.
ANIMATION & MOTION GRAPHICS
I started working with animation and motion graphics over summer 2020. I worked under the supervision of visual effects artist Richard Koci Hernandez, associate professor and Bloomberg Chair at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. Below is a sample of the work I produced using Adobe After Effects.
